Nishikori defeats Murray

Kei Nishikori Upsets Andy Murray by defeating at the US Open

Kei Nishikori from Japan jagged the biggest grand slam of the year winning his five-set upset of Andy Murray, the world number two champion in the U.S. Open quarter-finals.

Kei Nishikori, a 26-year old was exhausted against playing Stan Wawrinka, the third seed as 4-6 7-5 6-4 6-2 at Flushing Meadows. Nishikori also accepted that it was tough playing number one, two and three in the finals. It is not easy, but Nishikori managed to win the last few matches a little easier.

Nishikori took to his positives from the Open and believed in his high caliber of playing tennis in the last few months. He said, ‘Beating Andy gave more confidence’.

This year grand slam ended for Murray in a brutal way in comparison to the French Open last year that he won straight six and is well-known in these marathon matches for his ruggedness.

Andy Murray had several chances to have a set and a break prior to few isolated showers. However, the 15- minute weather delay for both players gave a chance to consult their coaches, now it looks like Michael Chang, Nishikori’s coach could have encouraged him to become more aggressive. Since he went striking clean for everything he could that he came winning Murray’s second serves and used masterfully the drop shot as a surprise tactic.

Andy Murray claimed the third set with intensity moving ahead by 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 margin that it looked favorable to him.  The plot was the same with Murray making the same strong start in the fourth set, but the bell before the quarter-final resulted in a break point at the fourth set start. This pushed Nishikori to meet the line judges and things changed claiming Nishikori as the winner.

The point needs a replay as Nishikori managed to come out and Murray endured a 30-minute frustration losing seven straight games.

The incident was the turning point but devastating ultimately 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 loss for Murray. This was unfortunately the first defeat of Andy Murray right from the time Ivan Lendl and Murray reforged in June their partnership and Ivan Lendl was watching him play.

Murray on the defeat put a brave face though it terminated Murray of his 2016 grand-slam season. He also said “I’m not ­disappointed,” and he said the weird noise interrupted his play in the fourth set calling for an early break. Murray also said, I did not let down anyone and fought to my best as I could.

Maryland Women’s Basketball Winners

The University of Maryland Men’s basketball team which has been ranked in top 5 for part of the season and the top 10 for almost all of the season seems to be in free fall at this point. They are now ranked 14 and could go lower still. The women’s team on the other hand is on a roll and doing great.

Maryland Women Win Big Ten

The other teams in the Big Ten are probably sorry that Maryland was asked to join the conference. The women have dominated since joining the conference. Maryland is now has 30 wins and only 3 losses on the season. They won the Big Ten regular season last year and this year. They won the Big Ten tournament last year and this year.

Although they were behind by 2 at half time, Maryland ended up beating Michigan State 60-44. This is their night win in a row and they are looking forward to continue winning and getting at least to the Final Four if not the Championship. Their only losses in the Big Ten were both to Ohio State. However, Ohio State didn’t make it to the finals of the tournament so Maryland didn’t have to deal with them again.

Maryland was Questioned at Beginning of Season

Because Maryland had several dominant players graduate after last season, some wondered how they would do this year. However,  Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Brene Mosely and others stepped up and the team has done just as well or better this year than last.

Michigan State came out strong and Maryland was on a cold streak for parts of the first half. They stepped up their defense in the second half and that made the difference. The defense was so good that Michigan State only shot 2 for 11 in the fourth quarter.  Maryland won despite scoring less than in any other game this year, shooting only 35% and having 19 turnovers.

Maryland Ranked #5

Although Maryland is in first place in the Big Ten, it is ranked 5th nationally, with Connecticut once again being ranked in first place. So getting to the Final Four is not a given by any stretch of the imagination. We wish them the best of luck though.

Maryland Basketball Number 1?

Women’s Team Stronger than the Men?

The University of Maryland has a chance to dominate in both men’s and women’s basketball. The men’s team made it to the NCAA tournament last year for the first time in a number of years and surprised a lot of people. The women’s team were national champions last year. They have lost some good players, but they still have a strong nucleus and it is possible they could repeat. They won back to back championships several times in the 1970s and 1980s. They have been national champions 3 times over the last 6 years, so the women actually have a much better record than the men.

Maryland Men to the Final Four or the Championship?

The men’s team has been selected to be anywhere from number 3 to number 1 this year. That depends on the poll and what day of the week because even the same polling source changes things a bit from week to week as to how they rank teams. And the Terps have a young team, so if the pollsters are right and most of the team doesn’t depart early to the NBA, they look to be good next year too.

It will be interesting to see how things play out. Rankings will change after the season starts and the games start to count. It would be nice if the forecasts are right because the coaches, Mark Turgeon and Bino Ranson seem like good guys.

Stone Has Moves

One player everyone is very excited about is Diamond Stone. He is 6′ 11″ and is vying to be their starting center. Everyone assumes he will be there very shortly although, having just come out of high school, he has a lot to learn, especially on defense. However, according to everyone his natural skills are amazing.

Last night the Terrapins played their first game of the season. It was really more of a warm up because no one expected Southern New Hampshire to have much of a chance against them. The final score was 91-55.

Big Men Got Bigger, Better

Whereas last year Maryland was a bit thin under the basket, they are very strong there this year. Last year there was a lot of perimeter scoring. This year they have the luxury of passing it inside and looking for a shot there. If there isn’t a shot inside, it can be kicked back outside. The great thing is that the big men can shoot and also are good passers so they can get it back out to the shooters. This should take a lot of pressure off the outside shooters and open up the opportunities for everyone because everyone is dangerous this year.

Damonte Dodd is the other center and by all accounts he has improved quite a bit from last year and is in better shape. Then there is Robert Sharp who had to sit out a year after transferring from Georgia Tech. He’s got skills. Then there is Rasheed Sulaimon who transferred from Duke. He is a really good player but hopefully doesn’t get any trouble. He is the first person expelled from the basketball program in Coach K’s 35 years at the school. There were charges of sexual assault against two women although no legal action was ever taken against him.

Its one thing to drop a tree in the middle of a forest where you don’t have to worry which way it falls too much as long as it doesn’t fall on your or your equipment. Try doing it in an urban or suburban setting where you can’t damage any other trees nearby and you have to worry about houses or other buildings and you can’t drop it on shrubbery or flower gardens or ponds. It takes a different type of skill.

PGA Championship 2015

The major golf tournaments have been really exciting this year. Although as with most sporting events on TV I only watch bits and pieces of the game or match here and there and hopefully catch the end if it seems exciting. Who has the time to watch four days of golf? I would rather be out playing golf or another sport or getting work done or work in the garden, whatever.

Day’s Day

In any case, Jason Day played lights out. He was just unstoppable and set an all-time record for the lowest score in any major throughout  history with a 20 under par. What a way to win your first major! He has been so close so many times and has been so frustrated.

On the last tee, he closed his eyes to visualize the shot. It is something he does fairly regularly to help him visualize what he is going to do. I can understand this because I often close my eyes to be able to concentrate better on the music when I am at a symphony concert. (No, I am not sleeping.) He hit it 308 yards and then finished it off ending the day with a 67. Over the four days he hit 68, 67, 66, 66. How is that for consistency.

He has been making strong efforts throughout this year. He could barely stand for part of the US Open due to headache induced vertigo. He fought through it and managed to finish. Then, he came so close in the British Open. He left the final putt short (so in actuality it was the next to last putt) and missed a playoff by 1 shot. He was not a happy camper and practiced even harder. In the PGA championship he was just in a zone the entire time and unstoppable.

DJ Dusted Again

Once again Dustin Johnson was in the thick of things but once again he couldn’t hold on, ending in a 3 way tie for seventh place.

Spieth the New Tiger?

But perhaps the most amazing player of the year has been Jordan Spieth. He won the Masters and then won the US Open. Then in the British Open, he was in it until the very end. Despite bogeying different holes, he kept coming back with birdies. Unfortunately he mishit his tee shot on the last hole and got a 4 when he needed a three to make the playoffs. His playing partner Louis Oosthuizen did manage to make a 3 and made the playoffs, only to lose by 1 to Zach Johnson.

So Spieth wins the first two majors of the year, then misses the playoff by one shot at the British Open and then is close all the way through the PGA Championship, finishing second. That seems like a pretty dominant year and we would be surprised not to see a lot more of Spieth in the future.

Phelps Regains Dominance

Michael Phelps is back! Phelps went through a rough stretch. He seemed to have lost focus and was no longer dominant as a swimmer. He had retired and came back and then retired and came back again, but without the same drive that took him to such heights originally.

Punishment

He also collected two DWIs or DUIs (whichever you prefer). The last one was this past fall and the powers that be in the swimming world decided he needed to learn a lesson and banned him from major competitions for 6 months. We wonder how many other swimmers who have had similar problems have met similar punishment? It is most likely part of what comes along with being famous and very visible.

Rehab Seems to Have Worked

However, Phelps may end up thanking them. He went to rehab and he seems to have come out focussed and with a passion for swimming again. He has been training like he did in the lead up to the 2008 Olympics and hasn’t done since. However, that training hadn’t been translating into performance in the swim meets he was allowed to take part in. Either his turns were off or something else would go a bit wrong.

But it was also because he wasn’t tapering and was probably tired at some of these meets. Tapering is when you shorten your practices and ease up some as you approach a meet. This allows your body to recover and you have more energy for the meet.

Sending a Long Distance Message

So they just had the World Swimming Championships in Russia. At the same time they had the US National Championships in San Antonio. Normally this would have our top swimmers but this year it was like the JV team because the top swimmers were all in Russia. Except for Michael Phelps because of the ban. But, they felt his presence all the way from San Antonio. On the women’s side, Katie Ledecky was in Russia and she made quite a statement as well. She won five golds from 200m to 1500m which is unheard of to win at such different distances.

There are three events that Phelps is likely to swim in the Olympics, 200m butterfly, 100m butterfly and 200m IM. In all three Phelps put up the best time in the world this year. First he swam the 200m butterfly in his best time since 2009 and faster than the gold medal winner at the world championships in Russia who had won the event earlier that day.

In Your Face

Then there was the 100m butterfly. Chad le Clos won this event at the world championships in a very fast time and then mouthed off, saying Phelps could keep quiet because le Clos’ time was faster than anything Phelps had swum in the last 4 years. le Clos had also been a surprise winner over Phelps in the 200m butterfly at the 2012 Olympics. Wrong move. Don’t taunt Phelps. A few hours later, Phelps put up a faster time than le Clos.

To make it a trifecta, after the 200m IM was swum in Russia, Phelps went out and beat that time as well. Not only were the wins impressive, but so was the rest of the factors that go into leading up to a win. You can’t swim multiple events and go all out every time because there is a lot of swimming over the swim meet. You don’t just swim in the finals. You have to swim in preliminary heats in order to get to the finals and you have to do that in all the events you are swimming in. So you can’t expend all your energy in the preliminaries but you still have to swim fast enough to get to the finals. For the first time in a long time Phelps managed all these aspects very well.

The swimming events in the upcoming Olympics is starting to look very interesting.

Amateurs

What do 1090 AM radio, Baltimore Used Appliances, and Pat’s Pub have to do with sports? We usually talk about the major sports and major sports teams, but what about going down past the minor leagues, past college, past high school to when we were really young, to elementary school.

We had different local businesses sponsoring our local little league baseball teams. The team I played on was the 1090s, sponsored by 1090 AM radio station which broadcast all the Orioles games and probably the Colts games as well.

On our little league team, we definitely had no one who was a future major leaguer much less a Hall of Famer. But we had fun, and to this day we remember our sponsor, so it probably made business sense as well as any generosity or magnanimity.

Baltimore Used Appliances is sponsoring a Hispanic little league team and Pat’s Pub is sponsoring a local bowling team. These are just a few of the many small and large businesses who sponsor and support local teams. Not just little leagues and young kids but what my wife calls the Old Fart Leagues. This could be masters lacrosse, adult soccer teams, softball teams and bowling leagues.

One funny anecdote. One time we were playing a masters lacrosse game and after the game was over the refs were chatting with us. They were funny and insulting at the same time. They said they had only refereed high school and college games before this and didn’t know what to expect. They said they were surprised that we actually had stick skills and knew what we were doing but it was like watching a game in slow motion. Even so, we had a lot of fun and we got exercise and it helped us stay in shape. At least a little bit.

So, thank you to all those many businesses out there that sponsor all the little league teams in different sports and also all the teams in various adult leagues.
